Brand Identity for Stuttering Therapy Curriculum
Shine Publishing's first professional curriculum for speech-language pathologists working with children who stutter received naming, visual identity system, and brand guidelines designed to appeal to children while establishing professional credibility with practitioners.
The Challenge
Shine Publishing needed a brand for their first professional curriculum for speech-language pathologists working with children who stutter. The brand faced a dual audience challenge: making therapy inviting for children while establishing professional credibility with practitioners across 200+ curriculum pieces.
The Solution
The visual identity centers on an open book logo with radiating rainbow lines forming exclamation point shapes. The brand system uses purple as the primary color with a bright secondary palette, employing color-coding to organize the extensive curriculum and distinguish lesson categories across levels. The complete system translates seamlessly across 200+ curriculum pieces while maintaining recognition and energy at every scale.

  • Naming
The client wanted to retain the emotional quality of "Shine" while creating something trademarkable. I developed "Joybound," a name working on multiple levels: children using this curriculum are bound for joy—on a journey toward it. "Bound" references books and publications while implying connection through joy. The name captures both movement (journey) and destination (joy) while feeling appropriate for an educational publisher.

  • Logo & Visual Identity System
The logo is an open book with radiating lines in different bright colors forming a rainbow that mimics exclamation points. This simple mark communicates multiple ideas simultaneously: the book represents publications and learning, the rainbow represents diversity and inclusivity, the radiating lines suggest energy and excitement, and the exclamation point shape reinforces joy and positivity. It's cheerful without being childish, structured while feeling welcoming. The radiating burst translates into a reusable graphic element throughout materials, and I designed a speech bubble framing device particularly effective on card decks and posters.

  • Color System & Organization
I retained the bright color palette from previous work that the client loved, establishing purple as the primary brand color, with a secondary palette of magenta, blue, teal, green, yellow, and orange. The color system proved essential for organizing curriculum: each of six Levels used different colored tabs to distinguish lesson categories (Relaxation, Rate, Emotion, Knowledge, Assessment), making materials easy to reference during sessions. Colors also differentiated card sets, poster borders, and curriculum submarks. For example, "Joybound Fluency" uses magenta as its secondary color while "Joybound In Action" uses orange, creating visual distinction while maintaining brand cohesion.

  • The Results
The Joybound Publications brand creates a space that genuinely welcomes children while demonstrating the professionalism and organization speech-language pathologists require. The bright, energetic visual system makes therapy materials feel inviting rather than clinical, while clear typography and color-coding make lesson planning and session flow intuitive for busy therapists. The brand translates seamlessly across 200+ curriculum pieces—from comprehensive manuals to individual flashcards to classroom posters—maintaining recognition and energy at every scale. Most importantly, the brand communicates that this curriculum was made specifically for children who stutter, not adapted from something else, positioning them at the center of a joyful journey.
