Joybound
Speech-Therapy Curriculum Design
This comprehensive curriculum system for speech-language pathologists working with children who stutter was published by Shine Publishing. The project encompassed publication design for a 126-page professional manual, 137 lesson plans, activity materials, and art direction for 200+ custom illustrations across all components.
The Challenge
Shine Publishing needed to transform complex educational content into a system serving both practitioners and children (ages 5-12). The curriculum required balancing professional credibility for clinical use while remaining warm, inclusive, and visually appealing to children across dramatically different formats.
The Solution
A cohesive visual system flexes across varied formats while maintaining consistency. The 126-page manual provides structured content with clear navigation. Color-coded lesson plans use templated layouts for quick access during sessions. Activity materials share a unified visual language across worksheets, posters, card sets, and interactive magnets, delivered in both physical and digital formats.

  • Visual System Development
Creating a cohesive system across such varied formats required careful attention to how design elements would translate between contexts. I developed typography and layout approaches that could maintain consistency while adapting to each format's functional needs: dense reference manual pages required different hierarchical structures than quick-reference lesson plans, which differed again from activity worksheets balancing instruction with workspace. The challenge was ensuring every piece felt part of an integrated whole—a practitioner moving from manual to lesson plan to activity card needed to experience visual continuity that reinforced the curriculum's educational methodology.

  • Character Illustration Direction
Working closely with illustrator Kam Peck, I provided art direction to ensure visual consistency across 200+ illustrated pieces. I joined the project after Kam had shared initial drafts with the client, providing direction to align the characters more closely with the new brand by refining the illustration style. I defined the color palette and established guidelines for color usage across the curriculum, ensuring consistency while allowing flexibility for different activity types.
